Gastric Bypass surgery in medical terms is known as Roux-en-Y. This type of surgery helps you lose weight by bringing changes in the small intestine and stomach. In this weight loss surgery, a small pouch is created from the stomach to the small intestine. This is done so that every food item which is eaten after the surgery goes directly into small pouch leading to the small intestine. Therefore, it bypasses the stomach and the first section of the small intestine.
This surgery helps in making the patient feel full with less as it makes the stomach smaller. It is one of the common types of bariatric surgery usually opted for when diets and exercise fail to show effectiveness to improve health problems. This type of surgery is used for patients suffering from heart disease, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and infertility.
After the surgery, the patient can consume liquids but not solid food items at least for the time when the stomach and intestines heal entirely. A particular diet plan is formulated by the doctor, which transitions from liquids to pureed to ultimately solid foods. Some restrictions may be put on certain food items, and some additional vitamins and supplements may be recommended.
